  1. Interesting that your grandmother's painting is quite similar to many in my parents house, most of them oil on wood. A reflection of the style of the time in Germany I suppose. The pencil sketch looks very much like my own grandmother as a teenager, and not unlike others of my own mother. Curiously also my grandmother and mother are both from Leipzig.

  2. Mine also are from Leipzig. The pencil picture is my mother when she was 14.

    1. Yes, I saw your grandmother's sewing diploma and noticed it was awarded from a school in Leipzig. That is why I mentioned it. Mom was born in Leipzig but spent all of her early years during the war in Lissingen. After the war they were able to go back to Venezuela where I am originally from. Like you I grew up hearing German so I can understand a fair bit of it but am not really able to speak it.

  4. You have some wonderful family treasures.
I admit I did not know there was a Jewish Brigade in the British Army, and when I commented to 'Other Half' he did know.
I think there is a book in you Yael about your grandmother ... there must be many who have a similar, but different, tale to tell, and to document your story for your grandchildren would ensure it becomes more than just an oral history.

  8. I think the tractor drawings are from when your grandson was watching the road builders the other day. I especially like your grandmother's painting.

  11. What a precious heritage you have in your grandmother's art work. It's beautiful.
The uniform patches from your father's WWII service particularly in the Jewish Brigade Group must be so full of meaning beyond the experiences of one man. Again, so precious. A rich history in your family.
