A few more words

The mind is a wonderful thing. How quickly one returns to the life that was. The roads we were afraid to travel threw are back to being everyday  roads, the places we could have killed there are again the places .

where we live our normal lives, as it were.

What is left is the knowledge that everything is temporary, at any given moment it will come back and it is never possible to predict or anticipate the intensity of the next blow.

That's why we live most of the time in pretense and denial. We live as if we are similar to the whole world. My day is no different from the day to day life of any other grandmother in England, USA, France and more.

As soon as my grandchildren left the protected room I went to them, the dogs were also very excited and happy that I came, one of the dogs developed some anxiety from alarms but knew how to run immediately to the protected room. In less than 40 seconds she has until the rocket falls.

We ordered sushi that everyone loves and there was great joy.

All this above the surface. Inside there is great distress and fatigue.

It was a Covid year where we were all in a partnership of destiny with the world. It was a special feeling that we were like everyone else, all in the same boat, a situation we had never been in before.

We came out of it almost first and did not get to enjoy it. Immediately what started here started and again we are alone with our troubles.

I once wanted to write a post about the reasons why I keep my blog even at times when I write so little. I did not write then, but now I can write that I have always had the good feeling that I am like any grandmother in the world, a kind of illusion that life here is the same life as In many other places in the world,(Me, Rachel and Weaver are going to the hairdresser every week...each to her own..),

and I also knew that in difficult times here it would be important for me to keep in touch with the bloggers who would be supportive. And indeed it happened. There were also people who had not read here before, and every good word was a lot to me.

To my delight, the trolls of previous years did not appear and we were spared all the heartache that accompanies it.

There are quite a few trolls in life themselves and this can now be seen in attacks against Jews all over the world and in demonstrations against us. There is probably no good way to explain to the world that when your life is in danger you are doing what you can to save them.

  1. Thank you Yael for this post which I can engage with as a reader in my distant, pleasant home in England and feel at least a little of the things you have shared and have my own frustrations at what I read written in other places by people that I know do not understand what is going on.

  2. We think here in Britain that we have undergone a prolonged period of stress, but it is nothing compared to what you have suffered. Your writing about it helps us, not least because it puts all our troubles into perspective. I hope your peace lasts for as long as it takes to make it permanent.

    1. Thank you Tom. I hope so too even though we all know what the truth is.

  3. The flowers still flower, your grandchildren still laugh, and the sun still warms our backs. We can do little to calm the hatred of others; just enjoy our lives as best we can. I really hope that Hamas will become more civilised, and that Iran will stop funding them. We have our fingers firmly crossed that peace will last.

  5. It is warm and wonderful to hear from you Yael. You really do help people far away to understand your situation better. I know we cannot truly understand without living it, but your posts help. It must have been special to reconnect with your daughter and grandchildren, share a meal and time together. I'm happy that you do keep in touch through you blog in both good and bad times because your readers truly care or they wouldn't be here.

  8. How lovely your garden! What a relief that a peace is established. I do not understand the hate; there is no need to harm anyone. I hope your peace is negotiated to a permanent solution.

  9. As you said, the difficult times are not over but for the time being, it is good to know that you and your family can return to experiencing some of the simple joys of life. Thank you so much for your voice that needs to be heard throughout the world and the photo of your home and garden.

  10. The human spirit is always optimistic; thank goodness! We must look forward to a time where normality is normal even though in the back of our minds we realise that may not be so. Keeping in touch with others is healing and friendship, even across the miles, or especially across the miles, is like a garden, forever keeping us focussed on a blooming of loveliness.

  17. I just discovered your blog today and read 4 or 5 of your posts. You are brave to endure the bombings and to write your blog. I hope the ceasefire endures, and I am praying for safety for you and your family. I visited Jerusalem many decades ago, a holy city.

  20. Peace restored. I pray for a more permanent peaceful solution as living with conflict and threat of war has to be a hardship of great magnitude. Sending love and healing thoughts to you and your family.
