what is happening now

My house is about forty kilometers north of Gaza and thirty kilometers south of Jerusalem. In the terms of our small country, it is far from Gaza and close to Jerusalem. I can't sleep at night and already know how to distinguish between the echoes of the shelling in Gaza and the explosions of the rockets from Gaza that are sent here and stop near the Iron Dome. The house shakes anyway. All the TV stations here talk in terms of the Holocaust when they try to describe the scale of the horror that took place on Saturday in the border and at the nature party where 260 young people were murdered. In the settlements,  in the families with their small children were murdered. There are parents, children and grandchildren who are still looking for their family member. The feeling is that something more difficult and longer awaits us in the coming days. People were asked to stock up on water and food as scary as it sounds and belongs to other times. I will update more later and sorry that I don't personally answer comments.

  1. It is dreadful what is happening there and it sounds like you are quite close to it! The media here are all reporting, our daily newspaper has had about 6/8 pages about it for the last 2 days. I just heard on the radio that children going to Jewish schools are told not to wear their blazers, it is unbelievable to me that children might be harmed here. You are in my thoughts..stay safe , and please let us know as regularly as you can that you are OK. XX

  4. You are very close. Too close. the description of where you are and what you're going through was very vivid. I think of you everytime I see the rockets flying over your cities and listen to the journalists giving reports

  5. Yael,
I think when armies shoot rockets and drop bombs on enemy territory, aiming for military centres, they may hit civilians but they will defend it as collateral damage.

But when Hamas targets a music festival filled with teenagers to murder them all, or kidnap toddlers into Gaza, it is EXACTLY like the Holocaust.

  7. Don't worry about answering comments, Yael. We're just glad to see you posting and to know you are okay. I was listening to NPR on my way home from work yesterday and hearing about the hostages that were taken and imagining the distress of their families almost made me physically ill. I don't understand how humans can do such things to each other.

Please take care of yourself and keep us posted as you are able. I hope things are better soon. I wish I could help somehow. Hugs.

  10. Yael, I was thinking of you not having a safe room. In ww2, we used to push a table against the chimney or other strong wall. We would put matresses on top and under the table, with pillows and blankets to give some prottection if the house was hit, Do not know, if that is possible for you though.
Thinking of you and sending love,

  11. 'Anonymous' above talks of 75 years of oppression. If 'oppression' is trying to protect your citizens from constant attacks, then she is right. What she fails to understand is that Israel provides water, electricity, food, medicines, internet and phone connection, to the ordinary citizens of Gaza who live under the 'oppression' of Hamas. Only when Hamas is defeated will the people of Gaza be liberated.

  15. The scenes on our TV are truly shocking. I have just caught up with your posts. Mankind seems intent on destroying itself. I'm a grandmother too and cannot imagine what its like when your family is in constant danger. Many years ago, I spent a holiday in Eilat and also visited Jerusalem. I thought it was a beautiful country: fresh dates and palm trees. Please keep posting. Your friends in blogland want to know you are safe.
